Professor K. VijayRaghavan

Professor K. VijayRaghavan, a Padma Shri, is the DAE- Homi Bhabha Chair Professor at the National Centre for Biological Sciences of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bangalore. From 2018 to 2022, Professor VijayRaghavan was Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India and the Chairperson of Prime Minister’s Science, Technology & Innovation Advisory Council (PM-STIAC). He was also Secretary to the Government of India, Ministry of Science and Technology, Department of Biotechnology (DBT). As co-chair of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI) when he was Secretary DBT, he played a key role in the introduction of several vaccines in the national immunisation programme. He was the founding chair of the board for the Coalition of Epidemic Preparedness Initiative (CEPI), a global partnership to fight emerging epidemics. As Chairman of the Biotechnology Industry Research and Development Consortium (BIRAC) he has a first-hand understanding of the development of entrepreneurship. He assisted in the formation of the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) and is a member of its Mission High Level Committee (MHLC). VijayRaghavan is a Fellow of the Indian Science Academies, the Royal Society, the Academy of Medical Sciences (UK) and a Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Sciences. He is an Associate Member of the European Molecular Biology Organisation.

However, some diseases still lack effective vaccines and there are large swathes of regions without proper vaccination infrastructure. Can new research address these challenges?
